Kiloran was first registered as a charity in 1994. We opened the house in April 1996 to provide residential supportive breaks for all carers looking after someone at home. After 20 years in the care field, Kate Gibbs recognised the need to provide a setting where carers could come for some "time off". She took the name "Kiloran" from the beautiful and tranquil bay of an island in the Hebrides called Colonsay.

It was in the spirit of that tranquillity that the Kiloran Trust was created in 1994, providing a sympathetic and welcoming atmosphere where visitors are free to rest as much as they want to, to spend time as they like, to unburden and talk if they choose and to give themselves as much space as they need to recharge their batteries before returning to their caring role at home. Kiloran was opened in 1996 and since then we have welcomed well over 1000 visitors. The year 2006 marked the 10th Anniversary of the charity, and after a Strategic Review of Kiloran, the year 2007 is looking forward to a bright future. Kate Gibbs has now retired as the Director, and has kindly agreed to be President of the Charity. Noreen McIlvenna has been appointed as the new Director, and together with the Trustees they are working to raise awareness of the need Nationally, for more provision of respite for ‘The Carer’. |
